The second annual Advanced Open Invitational, a Grade 3 match racing event hosted by the U.S. Sailing Center of Sheboygan, was won by collegiate All-American Stephanie Roble, who defeated an international field that had competitors from Greece and Canada as well as from all over the U.S. Second in the event was Stratis Andreadis from Athens, Greece, and third was Max Moosman from Long Beach, California. Rounding out the top four was Magnus Sandberg from Sweden and now living in Toronto. The event was a five day “clinegatta” run by US Sailing Team Alphagraphics match racing coach and three time match racing national champion Dave Perry from Southport, Connecticut. For the first two and a half days Perry put the nine teams through intensive match race training in Sheboygan’s Sonars, getting everyone up to speed on their boat handling, speed and match race tactics. Then the teams raced a regatta for two and a half days, with Perry actively coaching all the teams before and after each race. “This format is really effective” said Perry “because it gets all the teams sailing and racing their boats well, and provides each team the chance to repeat tactical situations over and over with active coaching and video replay on shore. Then they go right into a regatta when they are well prepared and ready to go, so the level of racing is greatly increased. It is the most effective way I know to quickly raise your level.”

Roble, a senior at Old Dominion University, was sailing with Katrina Williams, Sharon Wilkins and her coach at ODU Charlie Higgins. They sailed well in both heavy air and light, defeating Moosman 2-0 in the semi-finals, and then Andreadis 2-0 in the finals. She was carrying a penalty in the second race of the finals and managed to complete it and then beat Andreadis by one boat length to win the regatta. Andreadis traveled from Athens with his team of Theo Polichronidis, Stylianos Sotiriou and Tasos Milionis. They are actively campaigning on the world match race circuit and hope to be in the top 100 by year’s end. “We were very impressed with the facility and boats in Sheboygan and the sailing conditions on Lake Michigan,” said Andreadis; “we would like to come back again next year.”

News

July 14-16 the US Sailing Center – Sheboygan hosted the Area K Qualifiers for the 2010 US Sailing Junior Championships. This event consisted of youth sailors from Michigan, Minnesotsa, Illinois, and Wisconsin, sailing three classes of boats: Lasers, Lightnings, and C420s. The top competitors in each class received an invitation to the championships, which will be held in San Diego August 14-18, with the opportunity to compete against the country’s best youth sailors.

With an impressive turnout of forty one C420s, ten Lasers, and two participating Lightnings the Sailing Center was bustling with activity. The launching of 50+ boats, watching as they left the harbor in waves, brightly colored spinnakers full, was a spectacle in of itself, with nothing to say of the competition. The first day was a clinic with featured coaches, Cappy Capper and Sheboygan local, Todd Wake. Which started with heavy fog and coaching in the harbor, a cause of concern after the previous week of light wind and heavy fog at the US Women’s Match Racing Championships. However, the fog lifted in the afternoon and the fleet was able to run practice outside the harbor.

The next two race days had no shortage of wind, with a breeze at 15-20 knots for the majority of the time, the C420 and Laser fleets finished five races the first day and three the second. The wind was too much for some of the younger, lighter sailors, and capsizing became an issue but overall the talent of the sailors prevailed in the challenging conditions.

The winners of the C420 fleet, who will go on to the championship in August, include: 1st Place, Skipper: Justin Falconer and John Macadam of Chicago Yacht Club (Chicago, IL) 2nd Place, Skipper: Alex Curtiss and Katie Hall , also of Chicago Yacht Club, and 3rdPlace, Skipper: Clay Danly and Emily Vasiliou of Lake Forest Sailing (Lake Forest, IL).

For the Lasers, skipper: Peter Holz of Chicago Yacht Club took first, fellow Chicagoan, Ian Beihl took second, and Eric Anderson of Sheridan Shores Sailing School (Wilmette Harbor, IL) placed third.

The lightning fleet finished their eliminations first day with three races, with Whitney Kent (Skipper), Luke Franke, and Megan McMahon from South Shore Yacht Club (Milwaukee, WI) taking first in all three races against Skipper: Anders Elkholm, Caitlin McGoldrick, and Woody Hurst of Minnetonka Yacht Club (Minnetonka, MN).
