July 14-16 the US Sailing Center – Sheboygan hosted the Area K Qualifiers for the 2010 US Sailing Junior Championships. This event consisted of youth sailors from Michigan, Minnesotsa, Illinois, and Wisconsin, sailing three classes of boats: Lasers, Lightnings, and C420s. The top competitors in each class received an invitation to the championships, which will be held in San Diego August 14-18, with the opportunity to compete against the country’s best youth sailors.

With an impressive turnout of forty one C420s, ten Lasers, and two participating Lightnings the Sailing Center was bustling with activity. The launching of 50+ boats, watching as they left the harbor in waves, brightly colored spinnakers full, was a spectacle in of itself, with nothing to say of the competition. The first day was a clinic with featured coaches, Cappy Capper and Sheboygan local, Todd Wake. Which started with heavy fog and coaching in the harbor, a cause of concern after the previous week of light wind and heavy fog at the US Women’s Match Racing Championships. However, the fog lifted in the afternoon and the fleet was able to run practice outside the harbor.

The next two race days had no shortage of wind, with a breeze at 15-20 knots for the majority of the time, the C420 and Laser fleets finished five races the first day and three the second. The wind was too much for some of the younger, lighter sailors, and capsizing became an issue but overall the talent of the sailors prevailed in the challenging conditions.

The winners of the C420 fleet, who will go on to the championship in August, include: 1st Place, Skipper: Justin Falconer and John Macadam of Chicago Yacht Club (Chicago, IL) 2nd Place, Skipper: Alex Curtiss and Katie Hall , also of Chicago Yacht Club, and 3rdPlace, Skipper: Clay Danly and Emily Vasiliou of Lake Forest Sailing (Lake Forest, IL).

For the Lasers, skipper: Peter Holz of Chicago Yacht Club took first, fellow Chicagoan, Ian Beihl took second, and Eric Anderson of Sheridan Shores Sailing School (Wilmette Harbor, IL) placed third.

The lightning fleet finished their eliminations first day with three races, with Whitney Kent (Skipper), Luke Franke, and Megan McMahon from South Shore Yacht Club (Milwaukee, WI) taking first in all three races against Skipper: Anders Elkholm, Caitlin McGoldrick, and Woody Hurst of Minnetonka Yacht Club (Minnetonka, MN).
